Till crash ! the cruel coulter past

It dawns on me that my undergraduate career is fast approaching its day of reckoning, whether or not I’ve decided on a suitable course of action afterwards. I’m in the two majors I decided upon in first year, wondering what the options are from here.

I enjoy being in science. It makes me feel alive; it’s cutting-edge and logical. Things change before my eyes, new discoveries, new breakthroughs, made every day. It’s so exciting and glamorous. But real science, as I have been told, is not so glamorous. It’s difficult and arduous; Sisyphus has a better chance of completing his task than scientists do solving the world’s plethora of problems.

English delights me. It puts me at ease, it soothes me. Anytime I find myself in trouble, I need only a strong cup of tea and a good book to assuage my worries away. I love talking about English. I am only disappointed I can’t take any courses in linguistics or lexicography. Words, words words, as Hamlet calls them, are my lifeblood.

I’m just trying to plough through everything right now. I lit my candle at both ends and now it only delights my friends and foes, not me.

Oh, and I wish I had time to take photographs. Maybe I’ll go on a winter adventure somewhere?

Nature and Nature’s Laws lay hid in Night

Recently, I’ve gained a deeper appreciation of and love for science because of my biology labs, BIOL 240 and BIOL 360. Here are some pictures I’ve taken – they’re not amazing or groundbreaking but they make me excited:

I’m particularly excited because these were cells that I personally fixed for microscopy and photography. Given, they’re not the very best but I’m still very proud!

then be not coy

For the past few days, I have been trying to spend as much time with C as possible, knowing that she leaves for law school in Hong Kong. Today, we gathered at the airport to see her off, once and for all.

on the street where you live

I probably should be wary of creepers but it was too gorgeous a morning not to run out a take pictures on my street (before running back in so I could post this on time). I’m hankering for a McDonald’s coffee right now and it’s not too far away…think I can make it?

Or, after dark, will dubious women come

After having brunch with my family this morning, I came home to prepare for a quiet day of housecleaning and relaxation. Of course, it was not to be so.

L phoned me and asked if I would like to go to Oakridge. Intrigued, I acceded to her proposal and off we went, picking up A along the way. I later found out that a celebration for the opening of the Cambie Street – 41st Avenue Canada Line skytrain station was being held. Our tour guide, T, was on duty at the time.

T. Liu, hard at work

It was a raucous affair, featuring a mainstage and several informational booths. At the time I went, some youth dance groups were performing.

After being amused for a while, we decided to descend the stairs into the Cambie Street – 41st Avenue station. I was impressed by the cleanliness and brightness of the underground station; it was really quite nice! Unfortunately, it reminded me of the “No Mercy” campaign in Left 4 Dead, specifically in the subway level. Can anyone who has played Left 4 Dead blame me?

After spending a few more minutes appreciating our tax dollars at work, we left the station and returned to the festivities above ground. T took a moment out of work to watch the main stage, black tresses trailing behind her.

Re-entering Oakridge, we took a quick walkabout before T had to return to her post. On our way, a dark stranger whispered something mysterious in T’s ear…

"Come into my parlour," said the spider to the fly.

Just kidding! It was just A, talking to T. We ended up walking through Oakridge without much incident so we left. Thanks to L, A and T for making an otherwise quiet day into one filled with fun times.
