Opportunity: WorldMUN is Hiring!

Hey guys, I have an exciting opportunity to announce.
This spring, UBC will submit a bid to host the Harvard World Model United Nations Conference in Vancouver in 2011. ‘WorldMUN’ is the largest, most prestigious collegiate Model UN conference on the planet, annually bringing together more than 1800 delegates from around the world for five days […]

In Case You’re Interested

UBC Insiders has a put together a great summary of the the-president-of-the-AMS-just-sent-a-complaint-about-tuition-at-UBC-to-the-United-Nations debacle.  If you don’t know what I’m talking about, do check this Vancouver Sun article out.

A Conversation at The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, as Imagined by Blake Frederick

The Ubyssey reports:

The AMS has filed a complaint to the United Nations regarding the federal and provincial government’s failure to meet obligations to provide accessible post-secondary education for international students.
The complaint was submitted to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navanethem Pillay. The report reads that the AMS is submitting the complaint on […]

Autotune Becomes Useful

People who understand and appreciate science sometimes find it difficult to communicate that sense of understanding and appreciation in a way that is accessible and interesting to others. Sometimes it’s hard not to get downright depressed about the current state of science knowledge and education (when, for example, Lawrence Krauss mentions that “half of Americans […]

Some Perspective

This flash applet from the University of Utah’s Genetic Science Learning Center is just cool. It is absurdly cool. It is almost inappropriately cool. I cannot even begin to describe how amazingly cool and valuable and needed this kind of thing is. Please check this out.

Why Creationists Should Read Richard Dawkins’ New Book

Last month a friend told me that Richard Dawkins, that horrible scientist from Oxford, was releasing a book about the proof for evolution. The book, my friend said, was called The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence For Evolution (which is of course absurd, because Glenn Beck is the greatest show on earth.) I knew […]

Why Obama Should Keep the Nobel Peace Prize: Because Everyone Suddenly Cares About the Nobel Peace Prize

Please attempt to name the winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Peace.
His name is Martti Ahtisaari, a supremely accomplished diplomat, peacemaker, and former president of Finland. And unless you’re interested in international diplomacy, you’ve probably never heard of him. Whether you think this is a good/bad thing (Ahtisaari’s non-popularity among people not interested in […]

Vancouver’s New Green Roof

Whilst perusing the internets today I stumbled upon this wonderful video: a short film by filmmaker Dave Budge about the roof of the newly-completed Vancouver Convention Center (that cool-looking building they built beside Canada Place to house the media broadcasting center for the Olympics).

The video is by itself a spectacular piece. Budge does an amazing […]
